Padibe camp was burning so IGF built a full daycare Primary school to feed,medicate & educate these beautiful children for a better future
I raised my 4 children in the blessed country of Australia. When my youngest daughter turned 21, it was time to travel to Africa, to redress the imbalance and rescue African destitute children. In 1991, I sold my Sydney beachside home and all my earthly possessions and towed a caravan 500 kms from Uganda's capital Kampala to Kitgum, in the shadow of Sudan's mountains.
I parked under a tamarind tree, surrounded by vicious rebels and thousands of destitute children. With no electricity, running water, or food, I fought to survive alongside the local community. I was determined never to exploit these people's suffering, and be their servant, following Jesus' example. All expats including me are unpaid volunteers.
I began by gathering 50 children under a mango tree, and seated on a camp stool, taught songs, worked puppets and showed picture books. Noting their malnourished and diseased bodies I carried in food and medicines, and began caring as any grandmother would. Next I installed waterbores onsite, and began building classrooms.
Twenty years later, Irene Gleeson Foundation employs 420 Ugandan staff: teachers, medicos, cooks, builders transporters who organise
* the full daycare of 10,000 children in IGF Primary schools and vocational college.
* 91.5 FM Radio station with 1 million listeners from Congo to Kenya and up to Juba.
* 1000 member community church/ recreation centre for ex childsoldiers.
* 2 recording studios to rehabilitate ex childsoldiers.
* 60 bed residential AIDS Hospice.
Current works in progress are
* 3 storey classroom & library block.
* 4 storey creative arts centre for pottery, literature, art & crafts, drama.
* recording & promoting CKS son EXODUS 3v8, Top Gospel Artist Uganda.
* constructing Biogas plant for Hospice kitchen.
* constructing hospital/ outpatient facilities.
